Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi
An influential designer with a Finnish mentality, Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi took clothing design and the printed fabric to a new height. Eskolin-Nurmesniemi joined the Marimekko design team in 1953 and revolutionized 1950’s fashion with her striped Piccolo fabric; which led to the creation of the Jokapoika shirt in 1956. An artist who has always thought beyond herself, Eskolin-Nurmesniemi valued the distinctiveness of Finnish design and hoped that Finland's close relationship with nature would translate into future generations.
