Kirsti IlvessaloA non-traditional jewelry designer, Kirsti Ilvessalo comes from a background in weaving and textile design but upon an unusual chain of events she achieved a jewelry line for Finnish Jewelry company, Kalevala. Known for creating impressive wall rugs at her weaving factory, she casually entered a design competition organized by Kalevala Jewelry in 1947. Ilvessalo submitted her necklace named Doll and although she didn’t win the competition, the design was so impressive that Kalevala added it to their collection where it is still available. A testament to the open forum of Finnish design, Ilvessalo’s weaving background provided a fresh point of view to jewelry of the time.
