iittala i-Line Series by Timo Sarpaneva

iittala i-Line Series by Timo Sarpaneva

FinnStyle Team

As we celebrate 100 years since the birth of Timo Sarpaneva (1926–2006), we revisit the pieces that helped establish Finland’s reputation as a design hub of the world. Among his most influential works is the i-line collection, introduced by Iittala in 1956. Bringing together everyday glassware and artistic expression, the collection demonstrated Sarpaneva’s ability to transform functional objects into something extraordinary. Yet its legacy extends beyond the glass itself, the collection also gave rise to one of Finnish design’s most recognizable symbols, the iconic red Iittala dotted logo. Watercolors in GlassSarpaneva’s expertise and passion for glassmaking served as the foundation for the i-Line series. It was an extensive and versatile collection that included everyday drinking glasses, bowls, carafes, plates and more, including the distinctive Bird Bottle. At its heart was Sarpaneva’s innovative use of color. He developed a sophisticated palette of muted shades, including grey, blue-grey, lilac-grey and green-grey. These subtle and soft tones were designed to complement one another, allowing individual pieces to look cohesive when arranged together. Sarpaneva described this as “watercolors in glass." The collection balanced practical everyday use with an artistic expression. The objects could be seen as being on the border between a utilitarian object and an art object. Its success was recognized internationally when the i-line received the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale in 1957, paving the way for Sarpaneva’s reputation as a leading figure in contemporary glass design. Shaping iittala's IdentityCreated in 1956 to accompany the i-line collection, Sarpaneva’s red i-logo would become one of his most recognizable contributions to Finnish design. What began as a symbol for a single collection soon evolved into Iittala’s defining trademark that would represent the company for decades. The logo was born from a spontaneous idea around the art of glassmaking. The white "i" inside the red circle resembles a glassblower's pipe at the opening of a glowing furnace, while the dot represents the molten glass at its tip. The Pantone 200 red color adds to the logo's distinctive character. The symbol was pressed on iittala's wide range of everlasting glassware, cookware and art pieces. So, when you see the official "i" logo on an ittala product, it represents iittala's true craftsmanship and a piece of Sarpaneva's design legacy. Many people leave their "i" sticker on their iittala products as a symbol of authentic design and Finnish excellence. Although the company rebranded their logo in 2024, products with the red "i" dot are still sought after by collectors around the world. A century after Sarpaneva’s birth, the i-line remains an important chapter in Iittala’s history. While the collection demonstrated how everyday glassware could be artistic, its red logo continues to symbolize the brand’s commitment to thoughtful, timeless design. The collection stands as a testament to Sarpaneva’s ability to create objects and symbols that move beyond their original purpose, leaving a lasting mark on Finnish design! Rosenthal Suomi Dinnerware by Timo Sarpaneva

Rosenthal Suomi Dinnerware by Timo Sarpaneva

FinnStyle Team

As we celebrate 100 years since the birth of Timo Sarpaneva (1926–2006), we revisit the designs that helped define his contribution to modern design. Among his most notable works is the Suomi dinnerware collection, created for German manufacturer Rosenthal. Introduced in 1976, Suomi represents Sarpaneva’s pursuit of simplicity, precision and enduring beauty, displaying all the best elements of modern Finnish design. Named in honor of his native country, Finland, the Suomi collection reflects Sarpaneva’s deep connection to his Finnish heritage. Perfecting PorcelainDeveloped over nearly four years, the Suomi collection comprises around one hundred pieces, each reflecting Sarpaneva’s distinctive approach to form. Inspired by the smooth, rounded shapes of natural stones, the collection is defined by its softly curved contours and organic geometry. Its sculptural forms soften the familiar look of traditional porcelain, creating a balance between elegance and practicality. The soft, crisp white porcelain ensures nothing distracts from the beauty of the form itself. He combined certain pieces of the collection, like the Suomi teapot, with mirror-like steel for an elegant contrast. For Sarpaneva, the porcelain was supposed to be as simple and timeless as possible. Every curve and proportion was refined to achieve a sense of completeness, while the quality of the porcelain itself was designed to withstand everyday use and remain beautiful over time and through generations. His ambition was clear: to create tableware that was as functional as it was timeless, guided by his belief to “aim at complete perfection and perfect flawlessness!” Design Without CompromiseThe Suomi collection was produced by the Rosenthal factory in Bavaria, where progressive technology and experienced craftsmen offered the perfect atmosphere. There needed to be no compromise or limits to his creative imagination. At a time when porcelain production in Finland had been absent for multiple years, the collaboration allowed him to pursue his ideas without the limitations of local manufacturing. Through a close relationship with Philip Rosenthal, who was responsible for production design, the Suomi collection achieved its original goal of perfection. The Suomi collection made its debut in 1976 at the Bonn Art Museum in Germany, with the exhibition officially opened by German President Walter Scheel. Later on, its success continued internationally at the exhibition in Helsinki in 1978, attended and honored by Finnish President Urho Kekkonen. The exhibition showed the various stages of the design process, like sketches, moulds and the finished items. In its inaugural year, the collection also received the Gold Medal of the President of the Italian Republic at the international porcelain and ceramics competition in Faenza. Known as one of the highest distinctions in the field, the award is often referred to by design professionals as the “Nobel Prize of Ceramics,” showing Suomi’s status among the most significant achievements in modern porcelain design. Sarpaneva Cast Iron Pot by Timo Sarpaneva

Sarpaneva Cast Iron Pot by Timo Sarpaneva

FinnStyle Team

As we celebrate 100 years since the birth of Timo Sarpaneva (1926–2006), we look back at his remarkable designs that helped shape Finland’s international design reputation. Among his most enduring creations is his namesake Sarpaneva Cast Iron Pot, a piece that brings together traditional craftsmanship, thoughtful functionality, and Finnish modernism. Originally designed in 1960 for Rosenlew, and today produced by iittala, this award-winning pot transformed one of the oldest materials of the kitchen as a contemporary design object. Inspired by the Blacksmith's ForgeTimo Sarpaneva spent his childhood summers at his mother's house on Säviäntaipale in Pielavesi. His mother’s father, Abel Hujanen, was a local figure here as the respected village blacksmith. Young Timo helped out his grandfather at the blacksmith workshop, and later said that he “felt at home in the glow of the fire.” This early exposure to fire, heat, and the process of metalworking sparked his fascination with materials and laid the foundation for his successful career ahead. Timo's experience working with his blacksmith grandfather served as inspiration for this modern take on ancient cast iron pots. The Sarpaneva Cast Iron Pot is coated with a distinctive matte-black enamel, which preserves the traditional character of cast iron while giving it a refined form. The pot’s most recognizable feature is its removable wooden handle, a beautiful and functional detail that elevates the design beyond its practical purpose. The handle allows the pot to be carried comfortably from the stove to the dining table and can be repositioned to lift the hot lid. Sarpaneva once said that the idea was conceived by rethinking a traditional object in a way that wasn't too novel and would make "a damn good reindeer stew in the process." Decades of Enduring DesignThe Sarpaneva Cast Iron Pot quickly gained international recognition, winning the Silver Medal at the Milan Triennale in 1960, one of the leading showcases for contemporary design. Three years later, the entire cast iron series received the prestigious International Design Award from the American Institute of Interior Designers, further establishing Timo Sarpaneva’s reputation as a Finnish design pioneer. The design was even featured on a Finnish postage stamp in 1998, showing its relevance as a symbol of Finnish excellence. These accolades celebrated the design's thoughtful approach to everyday functionality by showing how traditional materials could be transformed into something entirely modern. Today, the Sarpaneva pot continues its legacy under the Iittala name. Its durable cast iron body, enameled surface and careful details remain as relevant to contemporary kitchens as they were in the 1960s. A century after Sarpaneva’s birth, this iconic pot reminds us that exceptional design is not simply about appearance. It is about rethinking familiar objects and creating something that endures across generations! Information & Images Courtesy of: iittala & Sarpaneva Design

iittala Festivo Candle Holders by Timo Sarpaneva

iittala Festivo Candle Holders by Timo Sarpaneva

FinnStyle Team

As one of the most recognizable objects of Finnish design, the Festivo candle holders by Timo Sarpaneva have made a lasting impression on the world of glassware and interior design. Designed in 1966 and introduced into production in 1967, Festivo candle holders remain celebrated more than half a century later for their distinctive sculptural silhouettes, textured, ice-like surfaces, and timeless elegance. Festivo was created in collaboration with Finnish glassworks iittala and remains an enduring icon of iittala's glassmaking tradition. What began as an unexpected idea evolved into a design classic, admired for its ability to balance artistic expression with everyday functionality. From the story behind its creation to the designer’s remarkable career, Festivo offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of one of Iittala’s most famous collections. The Origins of FestivoThe origins of the iittala Festivo Candle Holder actually trace back to an entirely different design. In the 1960s, Finnish artist Timo Sarpaneva and his close circle of friends, known as the Veljeskunta, or “Brotherhood,” gathered annually for a traditional Christmas lunch. Inspired by these occasions, Sarpaneva envisioned an oversized wine glass designed to hold an entire bottle of wine, featuring a sculptural stem with a series of rounded, knotted forms. While developing this design at the Iittala Glass Factory, master glassblower Reijo Löflund recognized the potential of the distinctive stem as a standalone object and suggested adapting it into a candle holder instead. The prototype of a new classic was born.  Festivo is characterized by a lively, textured surface that resembles melting ice, paying ode to the beauty of Nordic winter landscapes that Sarpaneva grew up with. Along with its distinctive textured surface, Festivo features defining rings around the stem that creates sculptural elegance and enhances its icy look. Festivo candle holders are available in different sizes, each featuring a different number of rings and a unique height. Designed to complement one another, these variations can be displayed individually or grouped together to create a layered arrangement that adds visual interest to any space. A Glass ExpertTimo Sarpaneva (1926–2006) was one of Finland’s most influential designers, celebrated for his ability to transform glass into sculptural works of art. Before his Festivo design, Timo Sarpaneva had already established himself as a leading figure in Finnish glassmaking, known for his innovative approach to the medium and his ability to push the boundaries of traditional glass design. He believed that "you must give glass freedom, nothing can be achieved by force – not with glass or with people." His expertise combined a deep understanding of traditional glassblowing techniques with a willingness to experiment with form, texture, and material. Fascinated by the natural qualities of glass, he explored its transparency, weight, and ability to capture light, often drawing inspiration from organic forms and the Nordic landscape. His innovative approach earned international recognition, including prestigious awards at the Milan Triennale and the Lunning Prize in 1956. These achievements laid the foundation that would later shape his iconic Festivo design. Having sold millions of pieces worldwide, Festivo continues to be one of Finland's most celebrated design objects and is represented in museum collections around the world. The candleholders have been in production since 1967 and are still manufactured at the Iittala glass factory in Finland, the same place where this design was born. In 2026, we celebrate 100 years since the birth of Timo Sarpaneva, whose creative vision continues to live on through designs like Festivo. The collection remains a testament to his mastery of glass and his lasting influence on Finnish design. Information & Images Courtesy of: iittala & Sarpaneva Design

What Is a Sauna Hat? Why Every Sauna Enthusiast Needs One

What Is a Sauna Hat? Why Every Sauna Enthusiast Needs One

FinnStyle Team

If you’ve ever walked into a Finnish sauna, you’ve probably noticed someone wearing a cloth hat. While it may seem unusual to see someone wearing extra clothing in such high heat, a sauna hat has been part of Finnish sauna culture for generations. Once you understand its purpose, you may never sauna without one again! At FinnStyle, we’re passionate about authentic Finnish sauna traditions and making them accessible to our customers, which is why we carry a selection of high-quality sauna hats to enhance all your sauna sessions. What is a Sauna Hat?A sauna hat is a specially designed cap worn during sauna sessions to help regulate the temperature around your head. You may look at someone wearing a sauna hat and wonder how in the world they aren’t overheating, but the hat actually helps keep them more comfortable! Because heat naturally rises, your head is actually exposed to the hottest air in the sauna, making it much hotter than the rest of your body. The sauna hat insulates your head and helps prevent overheating while allowing your body to enjoy the full therapeutic benefits of the sauna. This results in longer, more comfortable sauna sessions! Think of the sauna hat as temperature control for your most sensitive and important body part. Benefits of Wearing a Sauna HatHere are the top benefits of adding a sauna hat into your sauna routine: Protects Head from Excessive HeatAs mentioned, the key purpose of the sauna hat is to shield your head from the extreme temperatures. Without the protection from a sauna hat, your head and scalp can get uncomfortably hot long before the rest of your body heats up. It’s like a barrier that helps keep your head cooler and comfortable, and so you maintain a more consistent body temperature from head to toe. A sauna hat offers a more even, enjoyable experience. Protects Hair and ScalpExposing your hair to consistent high heat can dry it out, leaving it brittle or frizzy or time. The sauna hat helps reduce direct heat to your hair, making it especially beneficial for: Color-treated hair Fine or delicate hair Long hair Dry or already damaged hair It’s an easy way to care for your hair while enjoying the sauna regularly. Keep your hair volume and moisture in tact with a sauna hat! Helps You Stay in the Sauna LongerMany sauna goers find that they can enjoy the sauna longer when wearing their sauna hat. Because your head remains cooler and consistent with the rest of your body, your overall experience feels more balanced. This allows increased relaxation without feeling overwhelmingly hot. Since your sauna sessions are longer, you can make sure you fully embrace all of the wonderful benefits the sauna has to offer. Why Natural Materials MatterNot all sauna hats are created equal, so it’s important to buy a sauna hat from a reputable brand with expertise in sauna products and traditions. Traditional Finnish sauna hats are made from breathable natural fibers that perform very well in high heat. Materials such as terrycloth, linen, and cotton are great for their excellent moisture absorption, breathability, and comfort. Natural fibers also: Feel soft against skin Dry quickly between sauna sessions Stand up to repeated heat exposure Are durable without feeling too heavy It's key to pick a sauna hat that is thoughtfully designed with materials that support comfort and insulation. Picking Your Sauna HatFinnStyle offers sauna hats from top Finnish brands to suit every sauna enthusiast! Rento Sauna Hats are made from soft cotton and terry blends that provide excellent comfort and absorb moisture during every session. How to Clean a Sauna: The Complete Finnish Sauna Cleaning Guide

How to Clean a Sauna: The Complete Finnish Sauna Cleaning Guide

FinnStyle Team

Nothing beats the feeling of stepping into a freshly cleaned sauna! Clean wood smells better, heats more efficiently, has a longer life, and creates an overall healthier environment during your sauna session. Whether you use your sauna every single day or only on the weekends, knowing how to clean your sauna properly is one of the most important parts of owning a sauna. In this sauna cleaning guide, you'll learn: How to properly clean your sauna The safest way to clean cedar, spruce, and other woods Which products to avoid and which products to use How to remove sweat stains and odors How to keep your sauna looking and feeling new for years We will also share some cleaning methods used by generations of Finnish sauna owners! Why Regular Sauna Cleaning MattersSaunas experience repeated cycles of very high heat, humidity, perspiration, and body oils. Over time this builds up on the benches, backrests, floors, and more. Routine cleaning will help: Prevent built-up sweat stains Eliminate odors Reduce bacteria buildup Preserve the natural wood color Improve air quality Extend sauna life How Often Should You Clean a Sauna?A consistent maintenance routine will help extend the life of your sauna. A good maintenance schedule might look something like this: After each use: Wipe benches with a dry or slightly damp towel and leave the door open to ventilate. Monthly: Clean all surfaces with mild soap and water. Every 6–12 months: Deep clean all wood surfaces, including light sanding of heavily used benches if needed. We'll teach you just how to do this in this guide! What Cleaner Should I Use to Clean My Sauna? The right sauna cleaner makes all the difference. Unlike a kitchen or bathroom, saunas should never be washed with harsh household chemicals, which can soak into the wood and release fumes during heating. Make sure to use cleaners specifically designed for natural Nordic woods. FinnStyle carries authentic Finnish sauna cleaners and scrubbing brushes that are specially formulated for woods like cedar, spruce, pine. We recommend Nord Clean Sauna Cleanser or Sauna Life Sauna Cleaner for deep-cleaning the sauna. For effective scrubbing, we also recommend the Nord Clean Sauna Wood Scrubbing Brush, which can be used for all water and abrasion-resistant surfaces.  WHAT TO AVOID: Bleach Ammonia Pressure washers Steam cleaners Abrasive pads Furniture polish or wax Supplies You'll NeedBefore you begin, gather these items: Soft-bristle brush Sauna-safe soap Bucket of warm water Microfiber cloth Vacuum or broom Fine-grit sandpaper (120-220 grit) if cleaning sweat stains How to Clean the SaunaFollow these step-by-step instructions to properly and effectively clean your sauna: Step 1. Let the Sauna CoolNever clean a hot, steamy sauna! Always allow the heater and stones to cool completely before beginning. Open the door and vents to improve airflow. Step 2. Remove any Dust and DebrisStart by vacuuming or sweeping the floor, duckboards, corners, under benches, and around the heater. Dust and dirt can become abrasive when mixed with moisture, so removing loose debris will protect the wood during cleaning. Step 3. Wash the BenchesThe benches take the brunt of most sweat and body oils. Mix warm water with your sauna-safe cleaner. Using a soft brush, gently scrub along the wood grain instead of across it.  Avoid soaking the wood. A damp (not dripping!) brush it all that's needed here. Step 4. Clean the FloorFloors collect dust, dirt, grime and moisture. Again, use your warm water and sauna cleaner mixture + a soft brush to scrub gently. If your sauna has removable duckboards, take them outside to clean both sides and allow them to dry completely before bringing back in. Step 5. Remove Sweat StainsIt's normal for darker areas to appear over time on the benches where people sit. Most stains can be removed by gently scrubbing with warm water and fine sandpaper if really necessary. Light sanding removes only the top surface layer and restores wood. Always sand with the grain! Step 6. Clean Buckets, Ladles, and AccessoriesDon't forget the accessories! These items can also build up moisture and bacteria. Wash your sauna buckets and ladles, thermometer/hygrometer, sauna bench covers, and more. Any wooden accessories should dry out completely before returning to the sauna. How to Keep Your Sauna Cleaner LongerSimple habits and routines can reduce future cleaning and reduce staining. You should always: Sit on a sauna bench cover or sauna towel Shower before using the sauna Keep ventilation open after session Let the sauna dry completely Sweep regularly Clean any spills immediately Most Common Sauna Cleaning MistakesMany new sauna owners might be accidentally shortening the lifespan of their sauna by not properly cleaning, or not cleaning enough. Common mistakes to avoid: Using too much water Cleaning while the sauna is still hot and moist Using household disinfectants Closing the sauna before it's actually dry/ignoring ventilation Skipping regular maintenance More Frequently Asked Questions Can you use bleach to clean a sauna?NO. Bleach can damage the wood and seep into the grains, causing unpleasant fumes to release when the sauna heats up. Can I pressure wash my sauna?NO. Pressure washing is way too forceful and will push moisture deep into the wood. This can cause warping or cracking over time. How do I remove odors from my sauna?Always ventilate thoroughly after each sauna session. Don't close the sauna before it's dry and trap odors. Wash the benches with sauna-safe soap. How often should I deep clean my sauna? Most home saunas will benefit from a deep clean every six to twelve months. This time frame will depend on how frequently you use your sauna. Can I sand my sauna bench?Yes. Light sanding is a traditional way to remove sweat stains or dark spots and restore fresh wood when needed. Keeping Your Sauna Beautiful ForeverA sauna will last decades when paid attention to. A regular cleaning schedule, the correct products, and proper ventilation are key to preserving the natural beauty of wood. At FinnStyle, we've been helping our customers enjoy authentic Finnish sauna traditions for years. The Finnish Guide to Health and Wellness

The Finnish Guide to Health and Wellness

FinnStyle Team

In Finland, health and wellness aren’t trends, they’re a way of life deeply rooted in nature, simplicity, and balance. Rather than chasing quick fixes or complicated routines often seen today, Finnish wellness practices focus on slowing down, reconnecting with the natural world, and embracing rituals that support both body and mind. At FinnStyle, we celebrate these traditions through thoughtfully curated products that bring the unique essence of Finnish well-being to a wider audience. The Sauna: A Daily Ritual, Not a Luxury One of the key pillars of Finnish wellness is the sauna. It's more than just a place to relax, the sauna is a cultural institution woven into daily routines across Finland. With over three million saunas in a country of 5.5 million people, it’s clear that this practice is not a luxury…it’s essential. The Finnish sauna experience is about more than heat. It’s a ritual that encourages you to pause, breathe deeply, and let go of stress. The gentle, enveloping warmth helps to improve circulation, relax muscles, and promote detoxification through natural sweating. Many Finns alternate between hot sauna sessions and cold plunges or fresh air, stimulating the body and boosting resilience. This contrast therapy has been linked to improved cardiovascular health, better sleep, and reduced stress levels. But perhaps the most powerful benefit of sauna is its ability to ground us. In a world filled with constant noise and distraction, stepping into a sauna offers a rare opportunity to disconnect and simply be present. It’s a reminder that wellness doesn’t have to be complicated—it can be as simple as heat, water, and stillness. Finnish Skincare: Simplicity Meets Nature Complementing the sauna tradition is Finland’s approach to skincare, which mirrors the same philosophy of simplicity and connection to nature. Finnish skincare prioritizes clean, effective ingredients sourced from the pristine Nordic environment, think wild berries, birch sap, and mineral-rich clays. These natural elements are packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and nutrients that nourish and protect the skin without unnecessary additives. Instead of multi-step routines filled with synthetic products, Finnish skincare emphasizes quality over quantity. A few well-chosen products can hydrate, restore, and strengthen the skin barrier while allowing your natural complexion to shine. This minimalist approach not only benefits the skin but also reduces environmental impact, an important value in Finnish culture. Lumene, a renowned Finnish skincare brand, is celebrated for its commitment to pure, natural ingredients and its alignment with this holistic philosophy of health, wellness, and harmony with nature. The Sauna-Skincare Connection The connection between sauna and skincare is especially powerful. The heat of the sauna opens pores and increases blood flow, preparing the skin to better absorb nourishing treatments. Gentle exfoliation, followed by hydrating and soothing products, can leave skin feeling revitalized and deeply cleansed. It’s a holistic ritual that supports both inner and outer well-being. Sisu: The Finnish Mindset of Resilience Equally important is the Finnish concept of “sisu." Sisu is a unique form of resilience, determination, and inner strength. Wellness in Finland isn’t just about physical health; it’s about cultivating mental fortitude and emotional balance. Time spent in nature, whether walking through forests or swimming in lakes, plays a crucial role in this. Fresh air, natural light, and seasonal rhythms all contribute to a sense of harmony that modern lifestyles often lack. Bringing Finnish Wellness Home Bringing Finnish wellness into your own life doesn’t require a complete lifestyle overhaul. It can start with small, meaningful changes: creating a calming sauna routine at home, simplifying your skincare regimen, or incorporating natural materials and thoughtful design into your space. These elements work together to create an environment that supports relaxation, clarity, and well-being. At FinnStyle, our curated selection of Finnish sauna essentials and Nordic-inspired skincare products is designed to help you embrace this timeless approach to health. From traditional sauna accessories to naturally derived skincare solutions, each item reflects the Finnish commitment to quality, functionality, and nature. Wellness, the Finnish Way Health and wellness the Finnish way is not about doing more, it’s actually about doing less, but better! By embracing simplicity, honoring natural rhythms, and investing in meaningful rituals, you can create a lifestyle that nurtures both body and mind. In the end, true wellness isn’t something you chase, it’s something you cultivate, one intentional moment at a time.

Marimekko Bedding Guide: What to Know Before You Buy

Marimekko Bedding Guide: What to Know Before You Buy

FinnStyle Team

If you’re looking to transform your bedroom with bold pattern, timeless quality, and unmistakable Nordic style, Marimekko bedding is a natural choice. At FinnStyle, our curated selection of authentic Marimekko duvet sets and Marimekko sheet sets brings iconic design straight from Finland into your home. Before you make your purchase, here’s everything you need to know to find the perfect fit for your space and lifestyle. Why Choose Marimekko Bedding? Marimekko is globally celebrated for its vibrant prints, clean lines, and artistic approach to everyday living. When it comes to bedding, that same philosophy translates into pieces that are both functional and visually striking. From the instantly recognizable Unikko poppy pattern to more subtle, minimalist designs, Marimekko bedding allows you to express your personality while maintaining a cohesive, modern look. Beyond aesthetics, quality is a defining feature. Marimekko duvet covers and sheet sets are crafted from premium cotton, often in percale or sateen weaves, to ensure softness, all-season comfort, and durability. These are pieces designed to be used, loved, and kept for many years. The Marimekko Unikko Red Bedding has been an enduring customer favorite for years and the best-selling duvet set at FinnStyle. Understanding Duvet Sets and Sheet Sets Marimekko bedding is designed in the European style, which means you’ll find duvet covers, not traditional comforters. A duvet cover is a removable, washable cover that slips over a separate insert (the duvet itself), allowing you to easily change your look without replacing the entire piece. Unlike comforters, which are typically filled and sewn shut, duvet covers from Marimekko offer more flexibility, easier care, and a longer lifespan. Simply swap out the insert or cover as needed. When shopping, it’s important to know what is all included in the sets:  Duvet Sets typically include a duvet cover and two matching pillow shams. The duvet cover acts as a protective and decorative layer over your comforter or insert, making it easy to switch up your bedroom style seasonally. Sheet Sets usually include a fitted sheet, flat sheet, and two pillowcases. These are the foundation of your bedding and should feel as good as they look. Many customers choose to mix and match Marimekko duvet sets with coordinating or contrasting sheet sets for a layered, designer-inspired look. The popular Marimekko Pieni Letto Duvet Set paired with classic stripes creates an eye-catching pair. Choosing the Right Pattern and Color One of the most exciting aspects of Marimekko bedding is the wide range of patterns. When selecting your design, consider the overall mood you want to create: Bold and energetic: Large-scale florals or graphic prints make a statement and become the focal point of your room. Calm and minimalist: Smaller patterns or neutral color palettes offer a more understated, serene aesthetic. Seasonal refresh: Bright colors work beautifully in spring and summer, while deeper tones add warmth in fall and winter. If you’re new to patterned bedding, start with a duvet cover as your centerpiece and pair it with more neutral sheets. This creates balance without overwhelming the space. The Marimekko Kukkaketo Sheets are loved for their minimal print, which is easily paired with other patterns and colors. Sizing and Fit Matters Before purchasing, double-check your mattress and duvet insert dimensions. Marimekko bedding typically follows standard U.S. sizing (Twin, Full/Queen, King), but ensuring a proper fit will give your bed that polished, hotel-quality finish. Also consider the depth of your mattress. If you have a thicker mattress or use a mattress topper, look for fitted sheets with deeper pockets to ensure a secure fit. Care and Longevity Marimekko bedding is designed for everyday use, but proper care will keep it looking vibrant and feeling soft: Machine wash in cold or warm water with similar colors Avoid bleach to preserve the integrity of the prints Tumble dry on low or line dry when possible Iron on medium heat if desired for a crisp finish With the right care, your bedding will maintain its color and quality over time. Marimekko's bright and colorful sets, like the Marimekko Ojakellukka Bedding, maintains its vibrancy with attention to care. Why Buy from FinnStyle? Finnish design has found a strong and growing audience in the United States, and for good reason. Defined by timeless functionality, clean aesthetics, and everyday usability, these pieces seamlessly fit into modern American homes. As the #1 retailer of Finnish design in the U.S., we’ve seen firsthand which items customers return to again and again at FinnStyle. Below, we’re highlighting the Finnish design items that are trending right now across the U.S., from statement tableware to everyday essentials. 1. Iconic Marimekko Mugs: Everyday Art If there’s one Finnish design item that Americans can’t get enough of, it’s the Marimekko mug. These bold, graphic pieces turn your morning coffee into a design moment. Patterns like Unikko (poppy) and Siirtolapuutarha (community garden) have become instantly recognizable symbols of Nordic style. Their popularity comes down to three key factors: durability, versatility, and personality. Made from sturdy stoneware and designed for daily use, they perfectly embody the Finnish design principles of practicality, expressive, and built to last. The classic Marimekko Unikko Red Mug and the Marimekko Siirtolapuutarha Mug remain bestsellers for their bold prints. 2. Iittala Glassware Collections Iittala glassware has become increasingly popular in the United States, with iconic collections like Iittala Ultima Thule and Iittala Kartio leading the way. Designed to reflect the essence of Nordic nature and simplicity, these pieces balance sculptural beauty with everyday functionality.  As more U.S. shoppers prioritize durability and design heritage, iittala glassware continues to stand out as both collectible and highly usable. The Iittala Ultima Thule glassware collection's ice-inspired texture combines striking visual detail with everyday functionality. 3. Moomin Collectibles Moomin collectibles have seen a noticeable rise in popularity across the United States, as more consumers discover their charm and storytelling roots. These whimsical characters blend nostalgia, warmth, and positive philosophy, qualities that resonate strongly with today’s buyers. Moomin-themed items, especially Moomin mugs, offer both visual appeal and emotional connection. Their gentle, nature-centered worldview aligns with broader lifestyle trends focused on mindfulness and comfort. As a result, Moomin collectibles are becoming not just decorative pieces, but meaningful keepsakes in American homes. Moomin-themed dinnerware by Finnish brand Arabia brings the magical world of Moomin to mealtime. 4. Sculptural & Artful Objects As Americans embrace simplistic and hygge-inspired living, Finnish candleholders and lighting are gaining traction. Soft lighting plays a huge role in Finnish homes, especially during long winters, and that sensibility translates beautifully to U.S. interiors. Small but impactful, these items create atmosphere while maintaining the simplicity Finnish design is known for. Finnish candleholders, like the iittala Aalto Candleholders, are an easy way to incorporate Finnish design into the home. 5. Timeless Tableware That Mixes and Matches From plates to bowls, Finnish tableware is having a major moment in U.S. homes. Customers love the ability to mix patterns and solid colors while maintaining a cohesive look. These pieces are designed to be collected over time, not replaced. This approach resonates strongly with American shoppers looking for sustainable alternatives to fast home goods with low lifespans. Customer favorites include iittala dinnerware, such as Taika, Teema, and Kastehelmi (pictured above). Why Finnish Design Is Trending in the U.S. So why is Finnish design becoming increasingly desirable in the U.S.? American consumers are shifting toward quality over quantity, investing in pieces that last longer and feel more meaningful. Finnish brands like Marimekko and iittala have built global reputations for exactly that, creating design that is both beautiful and built for real life.  There’s also a growing appreciation for authentic design stories. Whether it’s a mug inspired by nature or a bowl designed for daily rituals, these products carry a sense of place and purpose that mass-produced goods often lack. Bringing Finnish Design Home The most popular Finnish design items in the U.S. right now all share a common thread: they’re made to be used, loved, and kept for years. They aren’t trend-driven, instead they are lifestyle-driven. If your design pain point is low-quality items that need constant replacement, Finnish design may be your answer! At FinnStyle, we’re proud to bring these timeless pieces from Finland to homes across America. Whether you’re starting with a single mug or building a full collection, Finnish design offers something rare: objects that quietly elevate everyday life!

Finnish Jewelry Traditions: Ancient Symbols in Modern Style

Finnish Jewelry Traditions: Ancient Symbols in Modern Style

FinnStyle Team

Finnish jewelry design is a unique blend of ancient symbolism, natural inspiration, and modern minimalism. Rooted in centuries-old traditions, today’s Finnish jewelry brands continue to reinterpret historical motifs in ways that resonate with contemporary aesthetics. The result is a distinctive design language: quiet yet powerful, simple yet deeply meaningful! Historically, jewelry in Finland served more than decorative purposes. During the Iron Age, pieces were worn as protective talismans, symbols of status, and expressions of identity. Motifs such as spirals, animal forms, and solar symbols were believed to hold spiritual significance. Materials like bronze and silver were commonly used and often crafted into brooches, pendants, and intricate chains. These ancient elements still echo in modern Finnish jewelry, now through a refined and minimalist lens. One of the most recognized brands preserving this heritage is Kalevala Jewelry. Founded in the 1930s, the company draws direct inspiration from archaeological finds and Finnish mythology, particularly the national epic, the Kalevala. Their collections often reinterpret ancient forms, such as protective amulets and symbolic rings, transforming them into wearable art that feels both timeless and contemporary. Kalevala Jewelry emphasizes storytelling, ensuring each piece carries a narrative rooted in Finnish culture. Kalevala amulets inspired by animal motifs used by early Nordic peoples Another influential name is Lapponia Jewelry, known for its bold, sculptural approach. Established in the 1960s, Lapponia gained international recognition through designers like Björn Weckström, whose work challenged traditional notions of jewelry. Inspired by the rugged landscapes of Lapland, Lapponia pieces often resemble abstract natural forms like melting ice, flowing water, or wind-shaped rock. While less overtly symbolic than historical designs, the connection to nature reflects a deeply Finnish style. Equally notable is Aarikka Jewelry, which brings a more playful and organic interpretation to Finnish traditions. Known for its use of wood, particularly round wooden beads, Aarikka’s jewelry embodies warmth, simplicity, and craftsmanship. While its designs are more modern and less directly tied to ancient symbols, they still echo the Finnish appreciation for natural materials and clean forms. Aarikka's Suomi necklaces are made from natural maple wood What unites these brands is a shared respect for heritage combined with a forward-looking approach to design. Finnish jewelry does not merely replicate the past, instead, ancient symbols are simplified, materials are refined, and forms are adapted to suit modern lifestyles. This balance between tradition and innovation is what gives Finnish jewelry its unique identity. In a global market often driven by trends, Finnish jewelry stands apart by remaining grounded in cultural authenticity. Whether through the myth-inspired creations of Kalevala Jewelry, the avant-garde forms of Lapponia, or the natural simplicity of Aarikka, these brands demonstrate how ancient traditions can continue to inspire and evolve. Ultimately, Finnish jewelry is not just about adornment, it is about connection. Each piece links the wearer to history, nature, and a distinctly Nordic way of seeing the world. In this way, people can both pay homage to the past and express modern style through ancient symbols.
