Maija & Kristina Isola
Maija and Kristina Isola; this mother daughter team has become a Marimekko design legend. First joining the company in the 1950’s, it was apparent that Maija Isola had a knack for textile design. After creating over 500 prints including the beloved Unikko pattern; Isola eventually became chief designer and arguably Marimekko’s most famous and celebrated artist.
Continuing the design tradition, Maija’s daughter Kristina joined Marimekko in 1964 at the tender age of 18. Working closely with her mother, Kristina produced original patterns but also began collaborating and expanding on her mother’s designs. Kristina now develops new colorways for prints such as Unikko to ensure that her mother’s classic designs remain fresh and current.
As you can see, it’s no exaggeration to say that Marimekko’s flourishing 60-year history has gone hand in hand with the Isola family. The legendary tale continues as Kristina’s daughter Emma now helps her mother create new designs.
