Marimekko PiccoloA background in ceramics, Marimekko print designer Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi helped shape the character of Marimekko’s patterns during its formative years with her impactful Piccolo print. Although she was not professionally educated in textile design, her lack of training is said to have made her a more innovative designer. The wobbly, striped lines of Piccolo were created in 1953 by Nurmesniemi whose design was a product of her two-toned exploration of stripes. She excelled in concocting daring and imaginative color cocktails which produced something completely new and avant-garde for 1950s Finland.
