Marimekko Care Instructions- Marimekko fabric labels
have washing temperature indicated in degrees Celsius. 60 degrees
celsius = 140 degrees Fahrenheit (hot water).
- The use of fabric
softener increases the linting of terry and reduces the absorbency of
terry cloth.
- Follow the instructions on the care label for recommended wash
temperature
- For colored articles, we recommend a detergent that does not contain any bleach or brightening agents
- Soaking is not recommended, as it may cause excess dye to bleed onto light areas of fabric
- Colors may bleed when exposed to rain
- Sunlight fades colors

Cotton Fabrics
The fabrics should be washed separately in plenty of water the first few times to remove any excess dye that may have remained on the fabric surface. Wash at 60°C (140°F - Hot), as washing at too low a temperature can cause the colors to bleed. We recommend washing before sewing, because cotton and linen fabrics shrink in the first wash. We don’t recommend dry cleaning to ensure that the prints retain their original appearance. It’s advisable to iron fabrics while they are slightly damp, as this will help restore the fabric's feel and smoothness.
Linen Fabrics
Like cotton fabric, linen fabric should be washed separately in plenty of water the first few times to remove an excess dye. Wash at 40°C (104°F).
100% Acrylic-Coated Fabrics
Thanks to its dirt-repellent coating, acrylic-coated fabric is easy to clean with a damp cloth. When the fabric does needs washing, wash it in plenty of water at 40°C (104°F). The acrylic-coated fabric is designed for indoor use. When used outdoors, the colors may change and fade due to sunlight and weather conditions. The fabric can be steam ironed on the reverse side.
Bedding
Marimekko bedding includes an attached tag with detailed instructions on washing and care. Follow instructions on tag.
Terry-Cloth (100% Cotton)
Terry-cloth products, such as towels and robes, should be washed before use with similar colors at 60°C (140°F - Hot). Follow the detailed instructions on the attached tag when loading your washing machine for additional instructions. Tumble dry at a lower temperature. The use of fabric softener increases the linting of terry and reduces the absorbency of terry cloth. To avoid pulled threads, never wash towelling products together with clothing that has hooks or zips. Simply cut off pulled loops, never pull them out.
Textiles / Accessories
Cotton
Cotton products are usually easy to care for. Because the washing temperature varies between products, the proper washing method should be checked from the care label attached to the product. Some dye may come off cotton products, especially in the first few washes. Dark and brightly colored products should therefore be washed separately or with similar colors in plenty of water. Cotton is best ironed on the reverse side when slightly damp.
Silk
A silk product may not always need washing; airing can help refresh it for the next use. The proper washing method can be checked from the care label attached to the product. For silk products that can be washed, Marimekko recommends hand washing. To hand wash, wash your silk garment separately in plenty of cool water. Do not rub or wring the product during washing. Use a detergent that’s made for silk. The smoothness and shine of silk can be restored by ironing or steaming after washing; which also helps the product to reshape, but a slight shrinkage after washing is normal for silk products. Avoid spraying perfume, cosmetics, or hair products directly on the accessories as chemicals can leave marks on delicate silk products.
Linen
The proper washing method can be checked from the care label attached to the product. Follow the recommended washing temperature. Since washing at too low temperatures may cause unwanted color transfer and washing too hot can cause shrinkage, most linens should be washed at 40°C (104°F). Wash linen garments separately in plenty of water. Some dye may come off darker fabrics, especially in the first few washes. It is characteristic of linen garments, particularly darker ones, that the color softens with use and washing.
Wool
The best way to keep wool clean and fresh is to air it. Small stains on wool garments should be removed immediately by brushing or gently cleaning the stain. When it is time to wash your wool garment, check the care label for the correct washing method. For wool garments that can be washed, Marimekko recommends hand washing. To hand wash, use a detergent that’s made for wool and wash your wool garment separately in plenty of cool water. Do not rub or wring the product during washing.
