The design for this iittala's Sooty Owl was originally created when glass artesian Oiva Toikka was experimenting with techniques to appeal to the Japanese market. Streamlined yet exotic, this piece has a unique look unlike other owls he has created. Inky black in color, the gumdrop-shaped body of the Sooty Owl is encircled with iridescent blue and orange spots. The most usual part of this owl is its face. The separate three dimensional visage is formed in a mold after which, the expression is added-on with golden granules. Treated with a finishing of fire, the facial expression comes alive. Instantly likeable, the Sooty Owl takes on a life of its own.
