To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Finnish independence, iittala has created a special collection of designs in ultramarine blue. The hue was born from a special glass recipe at iittala's glass factory in Finland and pays tribute to the clarity and true warmth of the Finnish national character. It's especially stunning on the organic shape of Alvar Aalto's iconic design. Inspired by the original Savoy vase, the taller and leaner Finlandia will make a dramatic display even when left empty. Alvar Aalto designed the fluid lines of this vase in 1936, and they beautifully reflect the curving shores and rolling waves of Finland's many bodies of water.

The majestic Aalto "Finland 100" vase arrived beautifully packed. Filled with white roses, it now resides in our kitchen eating area flanked by two Iitala candlesticks, each with a blue candle. As a tribute to Finland's heroic and successful 1917 fight for independence, the vase will take pride of place every December 6th with the candles lit in celebration of the first nation in the world to have provided universal suffrage.
