Four generations of weavers unite to create the heritage-strong Finnish brand of Lapuan Kankurit, currently ran by Jaana and Esko Hjelt. The family business began as a wool and felt boot factory in 1917 creating quality wool textiles. Today, the same heart and soul goes into Lapuan Kankurit products, but with modern weaving techniques, top designers, a professional staff, and a responsible attitude toward the environment. Their diverse range of products has been expanded to include blankets, scarves, table linens, sauna accessories and more, most of which are still crafted at their weaving mill factory in Lapua, Finland.

Lapuan Kankurit takes pride in investing in sustainable and ethical production processes, having their very own weaving mill, finishing mill, sewing workshop, and soon-to-be spinning mill. Production transparency and traceability are key brand pillars to Lapuan Kankurit, and they have a commitment to keeping environmentally-friendly practices in Finland and around the world.
Lapuan Kankurit specializes in weaving their textiles using natural fibers. Linen is Lapuan Kankurit’s main fiber. Unlike many textile manufacturers who use ready-made fabric, Lapuan Kankurit actually sources fully traceable ‘Masters of Linen’ yarn, which is all grown and spun in Europe. They then weave the yarns into fabric themselves at their weaving mill in Lapua, Finland. They are the only Scandinavian weaving mill qualified to use the European “Master of Linen” label on their products.

Certified wool is another key material at Lapuan Kankurit, in which they work diligently with suppliers to trace. Each wool type is spun into yarn in Europe. They have aimed to take their transparency and sustainability efforts a step further by utilizing Finnish sheep wool, which they collect themselves from local farms in Finland who meet their responsibility criteria. Lapuan Kankurit released their first Finnsheep wool collection last year, and they have relocated almost the entire production of their wool products to Finland in 2024.
