The Moomin Mug Craze: Why These Charming Cups are so Collectible

Arabia, a Finland-based tableware company with an already renowned heritage in ceramics, first introduced the Moomin mug in the early 1990s. From then on, these handheld porcelain cups transformed into a global collector’s phenomenon. These charming mugs feature the beloved characters by author and illustrator Tove Jansson, who managed to blend nostalgia, storytelling and happiness that captured the hearts of both adults and children around the world.

Origins of the Moomin Mug
The popularity of the Moomin mugs is also thanks to designer and Moomin fan Tove Slotte, who was entrusted with adapting the original Moomin illustrations for Arabia’s ceramics. Working with the full support and permission of Tove Jansson, Slotte carefully reinterpreted Jansson’s artwork from paper to porcelain. She selected specific scenes from Jansson’s books and comics, reworking them so they would translate effortlessly on the curved surface of the mug. It was important to Slotte to preserve the magic and storytelling spirit of the originals, while also making them functional for everyday use. Designing more than 100 Moomin mugs over her 30-year career, Slotte retired in 2022. Her long collaboration with Arabia helped turn Moomin mugs into the highly sought-after collectibles we know today.

The Early Days
The early Moomin mugs were not only loved for their magical illustrations, but also their structure. All Moomin mugs take their form from Kaj Franck’s iconic Teema dinnerware series. Teema was designed in 1952 and is still celebrated today for its innovation, function and durability. These factors made the classic Teema mug the perfect canvas for the intricate illustrations seen on Moomin mugs.

“The Green Comic Strip” was the name of the first Moomin mug, and was in production between 1990-1993. It depicts a scene of Moominpappa climbing a tree for a picnic directly from Jansson’s comic strip #8, Moomin Begins a New Life (1956). Later releases, like the Christmas Greeting mug in 1997, classic character mugs in 1999, and the Christmas-themed Fazer mug from 2004 only continued to propel the mugs into collectible items. The Moomin mugs were especially popular, and still are, in the Nordics and Japan.

The only Moomin mug from the 1990s that is still in production by Arabia is the ever-popular Moomin Love mug. Released in 1996, this light pink cup shows an endearing scene between Snorkmaiden and Moomintroll hugging from Jansson’s comic #11, Moomin and the Martians (1957). The other older mugs that are no longer in production are highly rare and sell on second-hand sites for hundreds of dollars, due to the fact that they had a limited number of pieces made.

Evolution of the Moomin Mug
Today, Arabia now carries an expansive line of Moomin mugs, continuing to innovate while remaining true to Tove Jansson’s artistic vision. Starting in 2018, Arabia celebrates Tove Jansson’s birthday each year (also known as Moomin’s Day) on August 9th with the release of a highly-anticipated, limited-edition mug design. The mugs often feature unique and thematic illustrations, such as the 80th anniversary Great Flood scene in 2025. The Arabia Moomin’s Day mugs have limited availability and are known to sell out instantly.

Additionally, Arabia introduced the Moomin Alphabet Collection in 2022. A part of the “Reading, Writing and the Moomins” initiative, the series includes a mug for each letter of the alphabet and a unique illustration style, encouraging consumers to gift loved ones their initials or make their own words at the table.

Most recently, the fan-favorite Love mug turns 30 in 2026. Moomin Arabia is celebrating with a new rendition of the classic pink cup, adding charming inner details and a special anniversary base stamp. Collectors around the world will have a new, limited-edition mug to add to their collections!

More Than Just a Cup
At the first glance, a Moomin mug might just look like another illustrated children’s cup. But really, they’ve become cultural icons due to their functionality and Tove Jansson’s enchanting Moomin universe. Because each mug captures a specific character or special moment, people form personal connections and collect mugs based on memories of their childhood. Beyond appearance is also high-quality craftsmanship that allows the mugs to be carried through generations. Moomin mugs have become more than just cute cups due to their sentimental value, artistry, nostalgia, and pretty porcelain form.
