This gorgeous folkloric pattern was created by new Marimekko designer Sanna Annukka. Kanteleen Kutsu depicts a scene from the Finnish classic, The Kalevala, in which animals gather to hear Väinämöinen play his stringed instrument. The black and white contrast allows for the full appreciation of Annukka’s rich detail and unique aesthetic. The quality canvas fabric is strong and sturdy, making it perfect for upholstering armchairs, sofas, seat cushions and more.More fabric information

This print is even better in person. The heavy weight of the upholstery fabric is perfect for heavy curtain panels.

Like another reviewer, I was not sure what I would do with a piece of this fabric, but I bought a yard anyway. I now have it draped over the back of my livingroom futon, sort of like a blanket. It looks beautiful. There is something about the design with all these animal images that has a certain visual power..hard to put into words.
Pros
Strikingly beautiful

Although I don't know what I will do with this upholstery fabric, I love the design and wish it came in other weights and colors. It is powerful and authentic and a great change from all the flowers. I prefer prints with animals. Maybe I will use it as a teaching example of abstract representational style in my art class. It is hard for students to understand the middle ground between photographic realism and unrecognizable swirls. I often use Charley Harper and Franz Marc to make this point, and this simple but powerful print will support the concept. Thanks -- please do more like this. Ancient, universal symbols of natural forces and beings.
Pros
Strength and clarity.
Cons
Stiffness, which will ease with use.

Fabulous Iconic Upholstery Fabric

I bought this fabric a few years ago to use on DR chairs. The fabric is more balanced between the white and black than it appears to be on this site. It's a scene-stealer, and recognizably Marimekko. The fabric feels like a thick canvas and cleans easily.
As promised, fabric came quickly in great condition

I saw this fabric at the Marimekko concept store in NYC and then bought it from Finn Style after I got home and couldn't stop thinking about it. I used it to re-cover a loveseat for my living room and accented it with a couple of Marimekko black and white pillows of different patterns. I have already received TONS of compliments on the fabric and how unique it is.
Can this be used for a comforter cover? How do you care for the fabric?
1 Answer
I would recommend to use cotton fabrics as a comforter cover, as they are much softer on the skin.
(Marimekko Upholstery Fabrics are 100% Teflon-coated cotton)
This fabric can be washed in 140° F/ 60° C (hot water)
